The first step in designing an SMPS transformer is to choose a core and bobbin geometry. Most practical SMPS transformer designs are derived from standard geometries offered by Ferroxcube and other manufactur- ers. What is the following calculation supposed to tell us; 1) take the turns ratio of the output transformer and square it. 2) then take the above result and multiply it by the ohms of the speaker that the output transformer will be connected to. Example, the output transformer has a turn ratio of 5.1 so the first step above is to square that which I use a maximum of 85% fill (or build) when comparing the actual winding height to the allowable bobbin winding height: (Actual winding height/Allowable winding height) × 100 = < 85%. The MT 4 high performance toroidal transformers set a new standard for wideband frequency response and small size. Naturally, we continue to support you and service your transformer after delivery and commissioning. With our Transformer Lifecycle Management, we can also precisely fulfill special customer wishes and play a major role in increasing the service life This Section covers the design of power trans- formers used in buck-derived topologies: forward converter, bridge, half-bridge, and full-wave center- tap. Flyback transformers (actually coupled induc- tors) are covered in a later Section. For more spe- cialized applications, the principles discussed herein will generally apply.
