The compositions of natural fibers can be divided into three main components, which are cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Table 3 displays the chemical composition of the natural fibers, in which the chemical composition and cell structures are quite complex and differ between plant parts and origins. filexlib. PLA-based natural fiber composites are entirely bio-based materials with promising biodegradability and mechanical properties. Several research studies have been carried out on PLA and its composites to explore their potential to substitute petroleum-based products, but until now there is no comprehensive review with up-to-date research data Natural fiber-reinforced polymer composite materials have emerged in a wide spectrum of area of the polymer science. The composite produced from these types of materials are low density, low cost, comparable specific properties, and most importantly they are environmental friendly.
The cellulose fiber consists of about a quarter of total natural fiber used in biocomposite research. The cellulose fiber has outstanding strength properties as it is constructed by pure cellulose. Natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites (NFRPCs) are gaining favor over synthetic fiber owing to their lower cost and environmental friendly characteristics, as they exist abundantly and are renewable. NFRPCs have developed from a laboratory scale of fundamental research to industrial implementation in the last 2 decades.
Natural fiber-reinforced polymer composite materials have emerged in a wide spectrum of area of the polymer science. The composite produced from these types of materials are low density, low cost, comparable specific properties, and most importantly they are environmental friendly.
Vaisanen et al. have addressed the advantages of using organic waste and residues from agricultural and industrial processes to develop a new class of composites, in which some of them are good at a relatively high servicing temperature condition (~300°C). Fig. 1.1 shows the thermal decomposition ranges for natural fiber polymer-based composites at different temperatures.
Natural Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites. The use of natural fibers as a reinforcement for various materials was recorded already in ancient Egypt; however, their rediscovery can be dated to the beginning of 20th century. Current special issue is devoted to the role of natural fibers as reinforcements for various biodegradable and
